A Stupid Butterfly Poem
Clipped between pane
and screen,
two monarch wings
form wicked angles,
dusted with the world that passed
since they last beat
beat beat beat beat beat beat beat.
Against the brittle, grating mesh.
Against the July-baked glass.
How was this wind-buoyed wisp
caged, walled,
black legs useless as dangling threads
against the invisible warden.
Was it an unintended kidnapping,
or did some brute chortle,
watching the aching wings slam against the hot screen?
My disappointment in Humanity hung
about me,
thick and heavy as the humidity.
It was then that I noticed the screen
gaping away from the window.
Only inches of freedom to me, but acres to one
who fits in my palm.
Stupid butterfly.

So you, my lovely Snark. Tenderhearted, but fully cognizant of the bleak ironies of life. And bad-ass. I like that in a friend.
And yet, I don’t think Walt Whitman would have cared for it.
Whitman? That hack? What would he know?
True dat.
So great, so stupid, so intentionally or unintentionally a perfect metaphor for almost all of the worlds problems or one unlucky bug.
How I love to return to your applause. I’ve missed you. 🙂 And thanks.
I think we have both been pretty scarce around these parts but when I do sneak back in to look around I always make it a point to see what you have been up to. Hope your head feels better.
I like it very much, and since I’m having a sad day, I had to bite my lip not to cry. Take that with a grain of salt though…
I’m sorry you had a sad day. I suppose the moral of the story is that the way out of despair is often right in front of you, but we’re often too busy beating our wings in frustration or fury to see the open door. It made me sad, at first, too. xo
A quality ponder, as intricate as the butterfly wing. How is your head these days. 🙂 I hope it’s OK.
Much better, Graham. Thank you for asking. This absence was one of necessity: packing, moving, unpacking and all the other shit that takes over life. Balance is returning and it feels good. How are you?
Pretty fair thanks. Been out and about taking advantage of the summer and photographing stuff. We are having a heat wave at present. It won’t last, this is Britain after all. Just as well really, we’re not used to it. 😎
We’re also having a heat wave. It’s been a miserably hot summer. You’ll hear more about that in my next post. I can’t wait to see your photographs. I’m such an Anglophile, I’ve actually been watching Bravo’s “Ladies of London.” Dead sober.
It worries me sometimes, what other people see of Britain.
If you want to see pics/stories of Britain, I’ve got a new blog :-

.. and there is no rhyming Haiku (yet) 😈 😛
After months of anticipation and waiting, we are rewarded with a bleak butterfly poem. How lovely…
…how lovely to see you back 🙂
I appreciate the sentiment, but my bleak butterfly was more of an appetizer. I always feel like I’m cheating when I throw a poem in; I have no idea why. How are you? I’ve missed reading your blog…and several others. Will find time this week, now that I’m getting back into the swing of things. Will be posting again tomorrow, so drop by if you can. 🙂
Hope things are looking up for you. And, if you want it to stay that way, I’d advise you not read my blog till you’ve had a couple of drinks. Not going thru a good time myself 😦
Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that. Life can be such a drag, sometimes; but it’s better than the alternative. Actually, we found out right after Mother’s Day that our landlord was going to sell the house we were renting, so the last couple months have been all about packing, moving and unpacking. I hope your problems are temporary.
I always like your stuff
